Microsoft Power BI

Microsoft Power BI

As you know, this site is a blog that covers Microsoft Excel via short blog posts (hints). Each hint should give you a good nugget of information on what is possible or how to do something, such as an Excel keyboard shortcut.

We then add one or more links to other sites that we consider to be a good source of additional information. This post has several very good resources that you would want to visit if this topic is of interest as this topic is so detailed and cannot be fully covered here.

We do assume that the majority of our readers work in Microsoft Excel to some capacity, be it as a hobby, for school, or for work. If you work in Excel at the professional level, and with BIG data, then you should understand this topic as Microsoft’s entry into this service line (Business Intelligence)  changes everything.

Business intelligence is nothing new as it has been around for decades. Once it was only available at the enterprise level, but that has changed in recent years.

Enterprise Level BI:

  • Yyperion (Bought by Oracle)
  • Cognos (Bought by IBM)
  • MicroStrategy

When Microsoft released their twist on BI, Microsoft Power BI, things really changed. If you work with BIG data, and if you work with the Microsoft data applications, working with Microsoft Power BI should be checked out.  This is an alternative to working with Microsoft Access.  This is actually more powerful than Access.  Many of today’s Data Scientists work with Microsoft Excel Power BI to harness the BIG data files they are asked to work with.
